The Calgary Flames have had little variation in their design during their existence. Working on these jerseys I began to see why. From their colors, to the jersey designs, to the logo itself, everything is very sharp and hard to improve on. Initially a design challenge, I did my best to use the unique color palette and classic logos to my advantage.
Home
The home design is the more “modern” design of the three. When designing, I had to decide between black and the deep red/orange as the primary color of the jersey. I would up choosing black for the alternate (see below) so the red was given to the home, as is standard today. I modified the logo’s colors, removing the white outline and switching it to black, for a more solid and clean look. The yellow numbers with black outlines really stand out on the all-red jersey, even with the other black elements like the shoulders, helmet, and pants.

Black-yellow-black stripes on the waist, sleeves, and socks round out the design with some nice highlights. The skates and gloves also have these colors on them for the same reason.
Away
The away jersey draws influence from the team’s older jersey designs. The logo is kept close to the original, adding a black outline as it had today. The red elements (shoulders, helmets, logo, numbers) create a good, deep contrast with the rest of the white design. I particularly like the all-red helmet with yellow pads which really has that vintage look to it. The skates, gloves, and all-black pants carry over from the home design.
Alternate
I wanted to go for something really different and unique with these alternates. I chose not to carry anything over from the home/away designs and create something really different. I started with the team’s old alternate logo and a black jersey as a base and began to think what I could add. A seemingly obvious choice, I thought that adding large flame elements to the jersey would look really, really cool and unique. After making them almost the entire length of the arm, I decided to add matching flames to the base of the socks and 3/4 of the helmet as well. I chose to leave the rest of the design all-black to really make the flame elements stand out. The yellow / orange outline numbers really stand out well on the black jersey.
I’m really proud of these jerseys, the alternate in particular. Out of all my designs so far, it’s easily one of my favorites that I’ve created.
Glamor shots!
