I’m taking a short break from past & present NHL teams for today’s blog entry. Instead, I did a redesign for my collegiate alma mater, the Canisius College Golden Griffins. I loved our team name. The Golden Griffins. Nothing generic or boring. A mythical creature. A griffin!
As far as I can tell, the team has had several designs with various elements and usages of color. For my designs, I chose to use the color palette to create bright and bold designs, and I really wanted to bring the golden griffin logo to the center of the design and not clutter it with any other wordmarks or logos.
Though technically there is more blue on this jersey, visually it feels equally gold, which is exactly what I was going for. I really wanted a 50/50 blend of blue & gold instead of showcasing one or the other. The Golden Griffin is proudly placed front and center on the jersey in a large golden stripe to really draw attention to it. A white outline encases both the stripe and logo, effectively combining them to create one fluid element.
The stripe continues around the back and also onto the sleeves to encase the numbers. The large golden stripe is mirrored on the all-gold shoulder/collar and on the socks. A golden “C” adds a highlight on the otherwise all-blue pants.
Compared to the home, this jersey uses gold as more of a highlight. Most of the elements played musical chairs, with the gold becoming blue and the blue becoming white. Again, though there is more white, this jersey feels blue. I love that sort of illusion that it creates. I also love how the Golden Griffin stands out boldly against the blue stripe and white background.
I went old-school for the alternate. For this design, I wanted to try to make a gold-heavy design because they are historically difficult to pull off (ask the Buffalo Sabres). “C A N I S I U S” in blue with white trim diagonally down the front of the jersey replaces the Golden Griffin, which moved to the shoulders and pants. Blue trip with a white stripe adds some highlights to the bottom of the waist and wrists of the jersey. The gold helmet and socks are reused from the Home / Blue design.
